Keeping a food diary around the house is another great way to help you monitor how many calories you consume as it can be so easy to overeat without realising it especially if you share your home with big eaters.

The Kaiser Permanente Centre for Health Research in the US found that overweight or obese adults were more likely to lose weight if they kept track of the amount of food they are every day.

At dinner the important thing to remember is that a portion of vegetables is around the size of your fist, while rice or pasta should fit in your palm and meat should be around the size of a pack of cards.
