In case you are getting confused, this is article about search engine optimisation (SEO) strategies and not advice about fedora fashion.

If you are a website owner, chances are you may be familiar with the wide range of SEO techniques available and the fact that they all have the hat suffix but you might not have a clue what I am taking about so read on if this is true.

The most famous SEO strategy practiced by reputable internet marketing firms is known as White Hat and this involves ethical techniques that conform to search engine guidelines, rules and policies.

White Hat SEO involves the creation of regular content through blogs, articles and press releases as well as analysing analytic reports to optimise for the most popular keywords.

The opposite of White Hat SEO is, you guessed it, Black Hat and this involves unethical techniques which are against search engine rules but can produce impressive results.

Black Hat SEO includes strategies such as keyword stuffing and hidden text, which can be regarded as spam, as well as the creation of cloaked pages which redirect users to a different page from one they selected.

While Black Hat SEO can generate good results in the short-term, the dangers are that websites which indulge in these activities will be caught and potential punishments include being banned completely from a search engine.

Competing websites can always report your site if they suspect you of Black Hat techniques and if you are found to be breaking their rules and guidelines your business' reputation could be severely damaged.

Gray Hat SEO falls inbetween White Hat and Black Hat and is quite hard to define as it takes strategies from both White and Black without being entirely ethical but also not at risk of being punished by search engines.

Green Hat SEO is a new strategy to add to the chapeau collection which demonstrates fewer procedural techniques and focuses more on driving direct traffic to a website rather than search engine results.

Brand awareness plays a key part in Green Hat SEO and aims to improve click-through rates and increase customer loyalty by becoming a trusted source for either a product or service.

Whichever hat you feel fits your business best, you should always acquire advice from a SEO company just in case you make a change which removes your website from all search engine results completely.
